A survival-focused mental framework for enduring extreme violence (e.g., enhanced interrogation, inflicting targeted torture) so you live, preserve your mind, and protect intel.
Universal resilience skills that reduce panic, preserve cognition, and limit secondary injury. Your mission in that moment is singular: survive the event with the least lasting damage possible and remain oriented to eventual medical and psychological care.
Consider this an acute type of self-preservation protocol - rapid defensive measures to stabilize autonomic function, preserve executive control, and mitigate psychological injury. Aligned with agency directives so operatives don’t lose focus and can recover fast.
*For this document, “torture” denotes the intentional infliction of severe physical or mental pain or suffering by, at the instigation of, or with the acquiescence of a public official or person acting in an official capacity. For a specific purpose (e.g., obtaining information or a confession, punishment, intimidation/coercion, or discrimination). The technical elements are severity (beyond transient discomfort), specific intent, custody/control over the victim, and state involvement, covering prolonged harm from enumerated acts such as threats of imminent death.*
[PART 1/5] Set a Purpose You Can Hold When Everything Else Collapses.
Choose a short line you’ve rehearsed that keeps identity intact: “Survive and return,” “Pain is just a moment of time,” or “I’m a professional; I do the next right thing.” This is very personal, so find what suits you with impact.
Repeat it internally at a calm cadence. Pair it with an image of one specific person or place that matters to you, and a three-word values list (for example: “Honor. Duty. Home.”). Under extreme pain, abstraction fails; concrete words and images keep the frontal cortex engaged, which dampens panic and buys you thinking time.
Precondition your purpose line as a physiologic switch. Train 4-6 breathing (inhale 4, exhale 6-8) while repeating it for 60-120 seconds daily so the phrase becomes a conditioned cue that downshifts sympathetic arousal. In extremis, tap each syllable on a fixed finger sequence (index→middle→ring→little) to occupy motor circuits and block perseverative loops while you hold the image and three-word values.
[PART 2/5] Employ Structured Imagery and Controlled Detachment to Modulate Pain.
